How the VAST video preview works
When you run a VAST audit in AdMeIn VAST Tester, the preview panel shows how your ad behaves in a live player while the rest of the audit validates the XML, wrapper chain, tracking, and media assets around it.
What the preview supports
The preview experience is designed to test modern and legacy video ad flows in one place.
- VAST 2.0 through 4.2
- VPAID and SIMID frameworks when included in the tag
- Wrapper resolution so previewed playback follows the full redirect path
- Real-time event logs and ad metadata alongside the player
- Media file auditing based on the actual creative returned by the VAST response
Step-by-step process
-
Load a VAST URL or raw XML
- You can start with a hosted VAST URL or paste raw XML directly into the tester.
- AdMeIn parses the input, identifies the declared VAST version, and prepares the audit.
-
Resolve wrappers and locate the playable creative
- If the tag contains wrappers, AdMeIn follows each redirect to reach the final InLine ad.
- This helps the preview reflect the real delivery path instead of testing only the first XML response.
-
Initialize the preview player
- Once the response is validated, the preview loads the creative into the player.
- Interactive frameworks such as VPAID or SIMID are surfaced when detected in the audit.
-
Analyze the returned media file
- AdMeIn inspects the physical video asset referenced in the VAST response.
- This allows the audit to report details like duration, format, codec, bitrate, and whether the file is actually suitable for playback.
-
Track playback events in real time
- As the ad runs, AdMeIn logs events such as impressions, quartiles, pause, resume, clicks, and errors when available.
- These events are shown in the audit so you can compare XML expectations against actual playback behavior.
-
Display audit context next to the player
- The preview is paired with ad information such as duration, format, ad system, API framework, interactive support, companion status, and clickthrough detection.
- This makes it easier to debug whether an issue is caused by the player, the tag, or the underlying asset.

What you will see in the preview audit
When a test runs successfully, the preview area is only one part of the full audit.
- A live video player showing the current ad creative
- An Ad Info panel with metadata extracted from the VAST response and media asset
- An Events Log panel showing playback and tracking activity in real time
- Navigation to the rest of the audit, including Summary, Media File, Structure, IAB Standards, Wrapper Chain, Tracking Events, and Companion Ads
This makes the preview useful for both creative QA and technical validation. You can confirm that the ad renders correctly while also reviewing the deeper audit sections if something looks off.
Common things to verify during preview
- The ad actually starts and completes playback
- The correct media file is selected after wrappers resolve
- The API framework shown in the audit matches the expected implementation, such as VPAID or SIMID
- Companion creatives appear when the tag includes them
- Tracking and player events populate the log as the ad progresses
- The media file audit does not reveal file-level delivery problems
